It’s been a while. You all kept me busy this fall and I’m already planning on adding more mini sessions for 2025! Sharing a few photos from the Kettle Cove minis. At the moment I don’t have any sessions available until the new year, and I’ll be opening my books up for 2025 soon. I’ll also start offering brand photography sessions in the new year. More on that soon!

Merry Maker’s Market

I’ve been working on a photo project this year - Maine Maker Monday. I’m wrapping up the project later this year and I will be hosting a maker’s market at Broadway Bowl on December 8th from 12:30 - 4:30 with some of the makers from the series and more! Come get some of your holiday shopping done and support local makers.

I’d love to see you! You can let me know you’re coming here.

Cheers!

3 Reasons to do in-home family sessions | Portland, Maine Family Photographer

In-home family sessions are a great way to capture your family in your natural family ways and can make it easier for your little ones to be themselves in front of the camera. Here are three reasons you should book an in-home family session.

  1. Weather: When booking an in-home family session there is no need to have a rain date!

  2. Comfort: Especially with newborns and children under 5 I find that kids feel more comfy in their own home. It’s their day to day environment after all!

  3. Special family moments: Do you have spot that you and your family cuddle together on your couch or bed? Do you make pancakes every Sunday morning? How about an epic fort that you build every Friday night? These are little moments that happen within your home that pass without documentation, but having a professional photographer capture these moments ensures that you have them forever and that every parent is in the frame.

Easter Basket Ideas | Portland, Maine Family Photographer

Maine Family Photographer

I grew up getting an Easter basket filled with candy. I LOVED it and I’m not too sure how my parents dealt with 3 girls on a crazy sugar high all day. I do things a little differently, giving one chocolate item (usually the bunny) focusing on things we can do together in spring. Here’s what I’ve included this year.

  • Bunny Pajamas

  • Reusable Water Ballons: They love these and could use a fresh set after having the same ones for a few years.

  • Bubble Guns: These are easy for little hands to use.

  • Wildflower Seed Packet

  • Washable Kids Metallic Paint

  • Owala Water Bottle: I got this one for myself and my kids love it so I got them both their own.

  • Annie's Organic Variety Pack: Perfect bunny-themed snacks that we already eat.

  • Kid Gardening tools: Great for the garden and the beach!

Upcoming Mini Sessions

  • Spring Mini Sessions

  • Mama Mini Sessions

Hello!

My family and I just returned from 15 days in Portugal. It was lovely and I realized that I’ve never done a post on how I prepare my family for such a big trip. Yes, lots of planning goes into it and yes, I’ve made mistakes. I want to share with you what I’ve done to try to avoid grumpy kiddos (it can’t all be avoided) and try to help you avoid some of those mistakes I’ve made.

Packing

I start early usually around 2 weeks before we leave. I know, I know that’s nuts, but I want to avoid missing anything especially when traveling internationally.

  • Video Monitor: For me, these are essential because kids do crazy things and it’s nice to have peace of mind. I go for closed-loop monitors when traveling. I don’t know other people’s wifi and this is just easier.

  • Packing squares: I have two different colors for each kid. They share a large duffle bag as their suitcase. It’s nice to be able to pull out the squares for each kid and it helps my oldest to be able to know which is his so he can help with unpacking or dressing himself.

  • Tile: I place tiles in all the suitcases and important bags because I have had my bags never leave an airport before and it’s insanely frustrating. It’s nice to be able to monitor them.

  • Medications: No one wants to be sick on vacation, but if you are traveling internationally you should make sure to bring meds, especially if you are traveling with kids. I always check the expiration dates and bring Tylenol and Motrin. I like to bring brand new ones if possible. I also bring Pedialyte packets for the kids. I bring some Zicam for the adults.

  • Sound Machine: bringing a sound machine that doesn’t need to be plugged in is nice because if you are on the go or the kiddo doesn’t have a plugin in their room they can at least still have some white noise. I love this one and it has a nightlight, bonus!

  • Black-out curtains: I love the idea of the slumberpod, but when flying internationally it’s an added bag that I don’t have room for. I like these Amazon ones. I will lay them flat inside the duffle so they don’t take up too much space in the bag.

  • Diapers! I always bring enough for 4 days. This gives us time to find some at a local grocery store and we aren’t rushing to grab them.

  • Yoto: My oldest loves his Yoto and it’s a great way to have less screen time on a trip. I got him this carrying case and it’s perfect to hold his listening cards.

  • Tablet: I’m not beneath having a tablet with some movies or TV shows. I also try to download some apps with different fun things like coloring or letter/number games. Download everything before you leave! Traveling is not the time to be searching for the right app.

  • Hand sanitizer: I know I know kids are going to touch everything but hey we still try to keep it “clean”. I usually pack around 5 small bottles to throw in bags and pockets when walking around a new city

  • Wipes: I pack 4 travel versions of Clorox wipes. Yes, we are that family that wipes down their trays and such when they get into a plane. To be fair I was that person when I didn’t have children. I also love these face wipes that I keep with me regularly, but def essential when traveling.

  • Clothing Detergent: Yes, I always pick an Airbnb with a washing machine and yes, I always bring my own detergent. You never know if you will need to wash something as soon as you get there and I don’t want to be hunting down laundry detergent if I’m jetlagged. Add a Tide to go stick to your packing list too. Especially if your kids tend to like to add food to their clothing. :)

  • Food: Whether you get in late at night or early in the morning, it is guaranteed everyone will be tired and maybe a little hangry. My mom always packed oatmeal packets when we traveled and they always came in handy. So I do the same! All you need is boiling water, perfect. I always have some bars and if we are traveling by car I bring some boxed milk, bread and a stick of butter (yup you read that right, comes in more handy than you’d think).

  • Kid Shoes: I always pack some rain shoes for the kids because the chances of it raining when you’re staying somewhere for a long time are high and there is no chance I’m going to let cold wet feet stop me from exploring. I love these for my toddler and these for my 6-year-old. The kids wear their sneakers on the plane and these additional shoes don’t take up much space.

  • Clothing: I always pack 7 days’ worth of clothing (this includes pajamas, socks and undies). Why? I don’t like doing laundry every second of every day and that gives me some wiggle room if the kids do need to change their clothing. When traveling in Europe most places don’t have dryers (though our last place did). Always pack an extra pair of clothes for every family member in their carry-on!

  • Books: I bring 3 books per child. We try to pick ones that are smaller and lighter (no LOTR picture books during travel) and ones that are versatile for switching between kids.

  • Snacks: Yes, I bring them and then when we get there I try to find a version of local snacks for the kiddos.

  • Converter and Power Adapter: Each person gets their own converter. I used these for the kids and my husband and I have this beefy one.

  • Car Seat Bags: We usually travel with our car seats. We didn’t do that this last trip (I’ll talk more about this below), but when we do we use these bags. They are great!

  • Pack and play: I bring my own crib when traveling. I don’t love the idea of my kid sleeping in a crib that isn’t theirs. The one we have isn’t great, but it works for us. I add this mat for more comfort for the baby.

Airbnb

I’ve had a lot of experience finding an Airbnb that works for our family and it can still all go wrong. This last trip the place we picked just didn’t work for our family and after some back and forth with the host, I was able to get a refund and find us a place that was a dream to stay in. My checklist:

  • Heat: Ask the host if they have heat. I know this sounds crazy but heat wasn’t listed as an amenity on our last Airbnb and therefore the host wasn’t required to give it to us. It was in the upper 40’s at night and far too cold for kids and it’s also a vacation. I don’t want to be cold or need to wear our jackets while we eat dinner (which happened).

  • Kids: Ask if the place has had kids stay there before. I read the reviews, but also always ask the host.

  • Babygate: Ask if they have a babygate for stairs. Most places have stairs and it would be nice not to have to follow a kiddo around 100% of the time.

  • Highchair: Ask if they have a highchair. I used to bring my own highchair with us when we traveled. Now that I have 2 kids I try to bring less.

  • Windows: Remember when I mentioned those blackout curtains? I like to confirm how many windows are in each room and I ask if there are any skylights. Yes, this has happened and it has been in a room with a twin bed so it wasn’t like my husband and I could sleep in there.

  • Outdoor space: My family needs to have outdoor space. I ask if it is shared and if it is flat. I know this part sounds silly, but we stayed in a place where you couldn’t tell at all that the house was on a slope and one parent had to be with the toddler at all times so they wouldn’t tumble down.

  • Parking: We usually always get a rental car. We stay in locations for long periods and we will take day trips to other cities or beaches. We stayed in Airbnb’s where the parking was a good 15-minute walk from the Airbnb and nearly impossible to get close enough to the Airbnb to drop luggage off. Now, we LOVED the location and the house, but this part was a little stressful and not for the faint of heart. I always ask and determine if it is worth it.

  • Washer and Dryer: most of the European Airbnb’s that we’ve stayed in don’t have dryers, but our last one did and it was truly lovely.

  • Grocery Stores and Pharmacy: I ask where the local grocery store is and pharmacy. Yes, I also google but I like asking as well. I then add them to a Google map so when I get there they are already marked. We will do lunch out, but dinners, especially in Europe, are later and restaurants open during our kid’s bedtime so we are usually cooking at the Airbnb.

Now if the host has these things listed as amenities that’s a great start, but I like to ensure they know what I am looking for so the things I need are there as soon as we get there. I am also an Airbnb host and if I can help make someone’s stay a little bit easier then I will do it!

Car Rentals and Car Services

  • Car Service: If you are staying in a city and don’t think you need a car then you might just need a car service to your rental. We used Welcome Pickups and they are available in most cities. We had a great experience and I was even able to add a car seat and booster making it even easier.

  • Car rentals: This trip I decided to have car seats added to my car rentals and the only thing they did wrong was not have them install the car seats. I’m not too sure if this is a European thing, but I would make sure the company does it for you as I had to spend 20 minutes watching a tutorial on how to install the seat. Not really want I want to do it on vacation. I also picked a car rental location near our Airbnb. Also always ask about the gasoline for the car. Yes, it is different in other countries. Our car rental company did a good job of educating me on that. One more thing to note, I made sure that I could get an Uber to the car rental location. Something to take note of depending on where you are staying. We aren’t big on getting rentals at the airport, it usually takes forever and isn’t a pleasant experience.

There is a lot here, but I hope it is helpful! If you do use something from this list and found this helpful I’d love to hear about it.

I’ll be selling prints from Portugal here. White House Custom Colour is the printer and they do lovely high quality work that will be delivered right to your doorstep!

____________________________________________________________________________

If you made it all the way down here congrats! Few upcoming happenings that should be on your radar!

  • April Minis! - 3 spots left. Get them before they’re gone!

  • May Mother Minis! - I opened up more spots based on your feedback. These will be intimate mother-kiddo sessions to celebrate Mother’s Day! We will be at lovely Fort Williams and if it ends up being too cold or if it happens to snow we can always switch this up to a studio session.

I have some exciting things in the works that I can’t wait to share with you all soon!

Cheers,

Jess

Our Favorite Valentine's Day Books | Maine Family Photographer

Maine Family Photographer - Valentine’s Day in Maine

Every month I rotate books for any holidays or events that might be happening. It helps us read new books and get into the spirit! With Valentine’s Day around the corner, I wanted to share some of our favorite Valentine’s Day books.

  • Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch: This is such a sweet story of a man who is lonely but ends up finding friends all over during Valentine’s Day. I cry every time.

  • The Biggest Valentine Ever: A story about 2 kids who learn that working together can be hard, but rewarding when they work on a Valentine for their teacher.

  • Little Blue Truck's Valentine: We LOVE Little Blue Truck in this house. This book is short and sweet (perfect for right before bed)! Little Blue Truck delivers Valentine’s to all his friends and they surprise him at the end.

  • Pete the Cat: Valentine's Day Is Cool: Pete starts out thinking Valentine’s Day isn’t cool, but changes his mind in the end. It’s very sweet!

Right around mid-January I order our Valentine’s Day cards from Minted. I love their selection and their designs. Highly recommend checking them out!

Do you have favorite books you read with your kids for Valentine’s Day? I’d love to hear what they are!

We still have some spots open for Saturday! Come grab a pastry and some sweet photos. I’d love to see you!

Kid Breakfast Inspiration | Maine Family Photographer

Maine Family Photographer, Egg on toast

Maine Family Photographer - Webb Photo

Now that my oldest is in school full time breakfast can be a little chaotic. I try to get something good in his belly before he heads off to school. However, giving him the same thing every day is something he isn’t into (I eat the same thing every single morning!). I have a few things on rotation that help keep him engaged with eating breakfast.

  • Grinchy French Toast! - A kiddo favorite. I get a loaf of brioche for this but you can use any bread you like. In a blender I add 2 eggs, spinach, a banana, vanilla, and milk. I usually make the whole loaf on a weekend and freeze the rest to pull out for a weekday. This came from Zaynes Plate. If you don’t already follow her you absolutely should. She gives great inspo!

  • Frittata - I throw anything in them, but it is such an easy way to get some protein in with a side of fresh fruit.

  • Dippy Eggs - A house fav. I toast the bread up and cut it into strips for ideal dipping.

  • Oatmeal - I try to stick to the stovetop as the boys like it better that way. Mash a banana up in it and some cinnamon and you’re good to go.

  • Banana Pancakes - Mash a banana up with an egg add cinnamon and you have a simple “pancake” that your kids will love. The banana caramelizes in a skillet beautifully.

Do you have something you make or buy that your kiddos enjoy eating for breakfast? I’d love to hear about it!

Winter Activities for Kids in Portland, Maine | Maine Family Photographer

Maine Family Photographer

Winter in Maine can be…long and it might seem like there isn’t a place to get out of the house and let your kiddos get those wiggles out. This is my 5th year in Maine and I feel like I’ve finally got a handle on a few great spots to help get myself out of the house and let kids run free.

  • The Point: This spot has a big turf field you and your kid can run around on, a cafe to grab a coffee, lots of tables to set up for snack time, and a small jungle gym area that your kids will love. The best part, it’s free!

  • Thomas Memorial Libary: This library in Cape Elizabeth has events for kids almost every day of the week. They also have a little play area for kids that they can hang out in after.

  • The Children’s Museum: I mean this one goes without saying, but it is a great spot for kids! They also offer classes throughout the week like Science for Tots. You do need to sign up for them!

  • Ice Skating: We love going to Thompson Point if you need rentals, but if you don’t the Cape Community Arena in Cape Elizabeth is also a great spot for you and your kids.

  • Skiing: If your kid is 5 then it might be time to start ski lessons! We love Mount Pleasant and Mount Abram. They both have great programs for the kids and great instructors.

  • Swimming: We love to take a break and go for a swim in the winter. Meadowmere Resort is probably our favorite place to go. A little bit of a drive, but worth it to go to a clean hotel and get in some swimtime.

  • Sledding: When we do have snow sledding is a big fun event for us. I usually bring lunch and we go for a few hours. Fort Williams is a favorite. You get a view of the ocean while sledding down epic hills, what more would you ask for?

  • Winter hikes: I’ll bring a thermos of hot chocolate and soup. A great way to get everyone moving during the winter. Even prettier with some snow! Some of our favorites are Jewell Falls, Trout Brook Nature Area, Two Lights, Gilsland Farm Audubon, Mackworth Island, and Bradbury Mountain.

  • Bowling: We used to frequent Sea Dog when they were in South Portland, but love the new Broadway Bowl!

I hope these help get you and your kids out of the house this winter!

Let’s get in touch!

Thank you!

Happy New Year! | Maine Family Photographer

Maine family photographer

Happy New Year! My family and I spent Christmas and New Year’s in Maine. It was just us, quiet and cozy and lovely. The house is still a mess, but it is slowly coming back to its original state. I’m feeling refreshed and ready for 2024 Webb Photo.

My intention for the new year is to grow! I took almost up to 2 years off growing Webb Photo. Longer if you include the pandemic. I’m ready to get to know my community and make lasting family memories for them that they can look back on year after year.

Few things! There are still spots open for the January 13th studio mini sessions. These sessions are great for families, maternity, newborn, and even brand headshots.

Studio Session - If you want a session that is more tailored to your family or your needs this might be the choice for you. I work with your family to help pick outfits and have a quick call to run through what photos you are hoping to capture before the session so we get everything you’d like.

In-home Family Session: This is a 1-hour session with your family throughout your home. I will help pick your outfits and have a quick call to run through what photos or areas of the house you are hoping to capture your sweet family. These are great for families with new little additions who don’t want to travel to a photo studio, but would rather capture their family snuggling at home.

Corporate Headshots: For professionals looking to add a new headshot this year I have you covered! I’ll be hosting a professional headshot session at Petalage on Saturday, March 30th. This is your chance to get a mini-brand session with me at a mini-session price! I’ll release the signup in February if you’d like to be the first to know.

If you have a few moments I would love it if you could leave Webb Photo a review on Google. This helps me to continue to expand my reach and capture more beautiful faces. :)

How to purchase photos on ShootProof

Hi There!

I’m so excited to announce that I now offer downloads and print purchases through ShootProof! You get to download the digital files of your choosing that go with your package purchase. But if you’d like to purchase any additional downloads or prints you can now do it all within the same system! My prints run through White House Custom Colour. They are high-end printing service with quality products.

That being said learning a new system is not always easy, while I feel that ShootProof is user-friendly I put together a step-by-step walkthrough on how to purchase additional items.

Instructions

1. Once you have downloaded the image amount for the package you purchased you will go to the little shopping bag image on the right corner.

2. Once you click that it will bring you to a new window. You will then be able to select any type of printing you want. If you want additional digital downloads, you'll go to the digital selection or you can select different prints.

3. Once you click digitals you can select from single photos or full gallery download. (amount shown does not reflect the current price of digital images. This is just a sample for education purposes.)

I hope this helps!

Webb Photo Happenings | Portland, Maine Family Photographer

Portland, Maine Family Photographer

Hi there, Jess here.

It’s been a while. My oldest started Kindergarten at the beginning of the month and it feels like life has been on fast-forward ever since. I have some things coming up that I’d love to share with you all.

Fall Mini Sessions!

I have mini sessions coming up in October! The first session is on Sunday, October 1st at Kettle Cove. It was sold out, but I’ve added one more session!

I also have a mini session on Sunday, October 15th at Gilsland Farm. There is one more session open for this location.

Holiday Portrait Sessions

I’m going to be offering holiday portrait sessions at the beginning of November. They will be held in a studio with a simple backdrop and will have a similar pricing structure to my fall mini sessions. If this is something you’d be interested in feel free to reply to this email and let me know!

Brand Photography

I’m going to be working on more brand photography this winter. If you or anyone you know are looking to add some professional photos to your website or social accounts I’d love to be considered. You can find some of my past brand work here.

That’s all for now! More regularly scheduled emails will start coming now that life seems to have slowed down a bit. :)

Sunday Funday | Portland, Maine Newborn and Family Photographer

Hi, hey, hello!

Maine Family Photographer Maine Family Photographer Maine Family Photographer Maine Family Photographer Maine Family Photographer

It has been a while. Summer seemed to wrap up with a bang and now we have a week of getting ready for my 5 year old to start Kindergarten. I’m not too sure how we got here, but here we are.

  • Back to school shopping: I’m sure I’m not the only mom out there prepping for back to school with a major clothing haul. I bought from some of the favs Zara, H&M and J. Crew, with a lot from Old Navy too!

  • New Breakfast Spot: Ugly Duckling! We all decided to grab breakfast here on Sunday and then have a morning picnic on the Western Prom followed by a leisurely stroll through the neighborhood over there. It was lovely and couldn't recommend Ugly Duckling more!

  • What I’m Watching: I must confess I’m not too drawn into anything these days, but I am watching Only Murders, which I love. I just wish I could binge the episodes instead of wait for it each week.

  • What I’m Looking Forward Too This Week: I got tickets to see Death Cab and Postal Service many moons ago and I’m so excited that I will be seeing them….The last time I saw Death Cab I was 17….

  • Mini Sessions! Some change-ups to the upcoming mini sessions. I’ve changed the location of the October 1st Mini Session to Kettle Cove. It has a lovely little beach, great parking and some great trees for that autumn feel. I’ve also added another mini session! It will be on October 15th at Gilsland Farm. It is a perfect spot for fall photos. Lots of old trees and open fields.

If you are starting school this week, or if you have already gone back to school, I wish you a great week ahead of you! I hope to see you and your family at an upcoming session!

Best Ice Cream in Portland Maine | Maine Family Photographer

Maine Family Photographer

Repeat after me, summer isn’t over! It’s almost the last day of August but that doesn’t mean me and my family will stop going for ice cream trips. That will probably stop at the end of September. These are some of my family’s favorite spots to go to when it reaches the warmer months here in Maine. Which ones are your favorites?

  • Willard Scoops: If you are in the South Portland area this is my family’s favorite spot, hands down.

  • Reds: If you like soft serve you’re going to like Red’s. They have dairy-free options too for those who need it.

  • Gorgeous Gelato: Ice cream with a view, yes please!

  • Zephyr Ice: Not exactly ice cream, but just as delicious.

  • Kettle Cove Ice Cream: A short walk or drive from Kettle Cove beach makes it a perfect spot for a treat after a day at the beach.
